Aging phenomena and their modelling in aqueous organic redox flow batteries: A review

Renewable energy sources and ways to store this due its intermittency are growing exponentially. Redox flow batteries, which allow decoupling from power, a promising way of electrochemical storage electricity. Vanadium the current technological reference, giving aqueous organic electroactive species, present advantages multiple designs thanks functionalization, lower cost, non-toxicity, less supply issues. Their long-term performances still compromised because degradations electrodes, membrane, or species. Physical models good predict redox batteries behavior on long time scales have better understanding phenomena their impact battery. Some membrane side reactions been modelled, however very few for active species proposed yet. This review presents some reported consequences cell components electrolytes. Different existing presented, with focus Multiphysics models. Degradations’ modelling in is discussed, as well proposals future modelling.
